An SUV that looks and drives so well is a winner. The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is one such example. With its three-cylinder four-cylinder engines, the Mazda CX-5’s cabin is easily mistaken for an Audi Q5 and it’s class-above design, there are options for everyone. The CX-5 will be a hit with you as soon as you take it for a test drive. The CX-5’s smooth steering, enthusiastic driving dynamics and confidence-inspiring controls make it a dream to drive. This is especially true when paired with the turbocharged 2.5-liter four cylinder in the Grand Touring Reserve or Signature models. You don’t have to spend a lot on a CX-5, as it made our 2020 10Best List and will satisfy you regardless of which version you choose.

What’s new for 2020?

Mazda has made minor modifications to the CX-5 in 2020. Mazda’s iActivsense suite includes driver-assistance features such as automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control. We expect all models to receive a new key fob that matches the Mazda 3 sedan or hatchback. Grand Touring Reserve models and Signature models get a new 8.0 inch infotainment touchscreen display.

Pricing and Which One To Buy

It’s difficult to choose the wrong trim level when shopping for a CX-5. The Sport is well-equipped and comes at a reasonable price. While the Signature model is more expensive, it offers class-above luxury that’s difficult to fault. The Touring model is our favorite, with faux-leather upholstery, heated front seats, six way power-adjustable driver seat, dual-zone automated climate control, rear USB ports and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Passive keyless entry is also available. If you require all-wheel drive, it is an option. This applies only to the Signature and Grand Touring Reserve models.

Performance, Transmission and Engine

The standard 187-hp four cylinder engine of the CX-5 has great throttle response, making it feel faster than it is. It feels weaker at higher speeds, like when merging onto the freeway or passing it. We were able to accelerate faster with the 250-hp turbocharged version, going from 0-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds. The turbo engine can be paired with a quick six-speed automatic transmission but it is only available with all-wheel drive. Skyactiv-D, the diesel 2.2-liter four cylinder engine (also called Skyactiv-D), can only be purchased on the Signature model. The CX-5 isn’t difficult to drive. Its precise steering and well-considered cornering make it a great Sunday cruiser. It can also handle rough roads with minimal noise and offers the same ride quality as crossovers twice its price. Its harmonious interplay between dynamics is unrivaled. The Mazda is able to isolate imperfections in pavement, reduce road noise and dampen the surface without making it stiff or floaty. The Mazda is also responsive on curves. The steering is responsive and smooth thanks to the electrically assisted steering. We found the Signature model to have a comfortable brake pedal feel. It operates without delay and is not too sensitive when you apply brakes.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

Comparing with other models of similar power, the CX-5’s average EPA estimates is lower than those of its rivals. In our testing, however, the Mazda was the only vehicle to surpass its EPA highway rating. The 32 mpg of the all-wheel-drive, unturbocharged Mazda CX-5 was comparable to that of the Honda CR-V. This performance was improved by 1 mpg when the front-drive CX-5, which is not turbocharged, is used. A CX-5 equipped with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive was also tested. It earned 30 mpg along our 200-mile highway fuel economy route. This was 3 mpg more than its EPA rating. Although we have not tested the diesel version of the CX-5, the EPA predicts it to earn 27 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo

You might feel like you have been kidnapped driving an Audi or Mercedes when you wake up in the CX-5 top-tier models. It feels luxurious with first-class materials and a stunning layout. For optimal comfort, the floor-hinged accelerator pedal feels more comfortable than the standard version, which is suspended above the ground. The well-constructed steering wheel is directly in front and not offset at an angle. All front-seat armrests can be adjusted at the same height to ensure maximum comfort. Sacrifices are small: the CX-5 was able to carry nine suitcases between its rear seats during our testing. The 2017 redesign actually reduced its cargo volume. A 2016 CX-5 that we tested had one more carry-on and three more with the rear seat up. With a flat load floor, the rear storage area of the new model is functional but more useful. There are also many places to store smartphones and other small items in the cabin. The console’s center has a tray in the front as well as a bin with a removable shelf.

Connectivity and Infotainment

The CX-5 has a 7.0-inch touchscreen, which sits on top of the dash like an iPad. The touchscreen is easy to use thanks to the intuitive rotary control located between the front seats. The screen’s small size and outdated menu design make it worse than modern competitors. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration can be found on higher-end models, but they are not available for entry-level models.
